As you know, we’re relaunching EAA Sport Aviation magazine in January with a larger format, a new look-and-feel, and a number of new features. One of those new features is a page devoted to the best member-submitted photo we receive each month, and it was decided that we’d solicit those submissions here in the forums at Oshkosh365. Just a few seconds later, my boss called me into his office to offer his congratulations for the fact that I now “own” a page in the new magazine …

Here’s how this is going to work:

  1. First, you’ll take a great photo, one that evokes the spirit of aviation. Feel free to include a caption or any other notes about the setting, subject matter, etc. The "spirit of aviation" is a broad definition - show us pictures OF aircraft, pictures taken FROM aircraft, people thinking ABOUT aircraft ... well, as long as it's obvious ... anyway, you get the idea.

  2. Then, you’ll reply to this thread and embed the picture in your post.

  3. As our deadline approaches each month, the photo submissions will be reviewed by the editorial team (and me!), and we will choose a winner to be published in the magazine (with full and appropriate credit, naturally.)

  4. We’ll contact the photographer directly to arrange for their submission of a print-quality version of the winning photo (see below.) We’ll also provide the basic legalese at that point to ensure that we have the rights to publish the photo.

There are a few things to point out:

  • Note that, above, we said you’ll take the photo – submissions must be made by the original photographer.

  • While we will be choosing the winners ourselves, we are, in fact, human beings, and certainly wouldn’t ignore a picture if it had an unusually high “thumbs-up” count or a lot of positive comments here in the forum.

  • Photos must be posted here to be considered – email submissions will not be accepted.

  • In addition, the pictures you post here will be automatically resized for web viewing, which means they won’t be of a high-enough resolution for print. So, in order for your picture to be considered for publication, you must be able to provide a high resolution print-ready version on request.

  • This means that the original should ideally be 8 Megapixels (~3264 x 2448) or higher.

  • Enter as many pictures as you like – the more the merrier!

Most of my kidding aside, it may be “my” page, but it’s your magazine, so we hope you’ll be as excited as we are to show off your photography!

NOTE: The deadline for submissions to the January, 2010 issue is November 10, 2009.

Deciding, what to build, how to build it, and how to paint it, as Frank would say, “Your Way”.

Hal or Adam, can you somehow post these attached pictures for me? It won't let me embed pictures into my posts. The canard wing airplane is a Cozy taken at the Airventure Cup Races at Dayton-Wright Brothers Airport in Miamisburg, OH on July 25, 2009. The first one is a Cessna T-50 Bobcat, a.k.a. "Bamboo Bomber." (I'm sure Hal will love this one.) It was taken June 20, 2009 at Middletown Regional Airport in Middletown, OH. The Mustangs' picture was taken on June 27, 2009 at Middletown.

I was fortunate to drive by Pioneer Airport one chilly morning as Summer drew to a close.  I captured this photo while the sun rose in the eastern sky repeating its ritual of burning away the morning fog.  I kind of expected to see Gregory Peck or John Wayne giving a thumbs up from the left seat...

Jesse - As you can see, request granted! And, yes, I'm ALWAYS glad to see another Bamboo Bomber!

AirVenture 09 - Waiting for the airshow to start on Saturday, we were sitting next to an elderly couple from IA.  Just then their grandson arrived,  he had just come from KidsVenture with his latest creation and color design.  Outstanding!
