I can not think of any group better to kick around the subject of UFO's than the members of EAA.  I have seen one some years ago.  One evening I was changing brake pads on my car, I finished as it was getting dark.  Having strained my back a little, I just laid down on my back on the patio.  Facing up looking into the sky, I was startled to see a black object  about 300 feet above the ground moving south at an airspeed of about 150 mph.  It was I estimate about 100 wide, circular for the most part, black, and no sound and no lights.  I could make out what looked like Aluminum round ports.-----------This sighting was due East of Tallahassee, Florida about 7 miles from the city, moving south towards the Gulf of Mexico.   If I had been sitting in a chair, it would have passed by without me ever knowing it or seeing it.  I am aware of just north of this location that there is a very large restricted area to keep aircraft from flying over and through the area.  This happened around 20 years ago.  The sky was clear and bright with stars, and the object by blocking out the stars, gave the shape in general.

Well they might be flying illegally if they don't have a plastic ticket and magnetic strip ...or in actuality, maybe we are the reverse...

If you do see something ....try and write down specifically what you see and feel...if you have a camera...take pictures around even if you don't see anything....used to seem stupid when film was so expensive but now that things aare digital...there have been cases where the no see ums are pretty spectacular...

lights and specifically colors in the order they appear can mean something...there is a progression of colors that may denote what the power band is....photons of light are created when different elements have a change and throw off a photon and will produce a certain color telling what it was......

there can be erratic movement also  that might be related to limitations of how the propulsion works...

If you are reading this and from another planet...I would like to have the first BD-5 on one if it's a nicer place....and I'l give you a dvd discount... BTW...do you have proseal ????

I've interviewed a number of United Flying Octogenarians for EAA's Timeless Voices program - does that count?

I've seen a lot of floaters. More since a recent eye problem.

I've always had a plan in the back of my mind to make a  round rc model with electric power to be very quiet and some nice LED's, or perhaps a little speaker with that sequence from Close Encounters..... Fortunately I haven't done it yet.

I think it's very easy to misinterpret what we see. Our minds are wired to perceive patterns. Sometimes if we're in an odd state, we see or hear a lot of things that aren't there. Ever been someplace completely alone for a week, no net, no phone, no nothing? You start to hear "almost" voices.

Ralph -

Great idea for a forum thread, and a fascinating story of your own!

The topic has always been interesting to me - the ex-cop in me loves a good mystery, and the lifelong aviation fanatic in me demands to know everything I can about anything that flies.

While I don't agree for a moment with the self-styled UFOlogists who blithely pass around stories of regular visitation and government collusion with big-eyed beings from planet Ektron, I can't help but be intrigued by the small percentage of sightings by credible witnesses that don't have an immediate and obvious explanation.

I've never seen anything I couldn't ultimately identify myself, but I'm more than a little curious.

So how about the rest of you? Any other stories to share?

Hal

Thanks for the words, and I think it was an asset being versed in aviation when I saw the UFO.   Thinking back over the years on this sighting,  I will make this statement.   Lockheed has a history of painting their secret projects black.  One never seems to have infrared film in the camera when most needed.

Years ago, when leaving work (I was a municipal traffic engineer) with a co-worker, we noticed a row of red lights moving east to west and low enough that they were blocked out as the passed behind trees surrounding the parking lot.  My first thought was that it was the Goodyear blimp, as it regularly operated in this area of Southern California.  Exiting the parking lot in my car, I noticed that the lights had taken on a "V" shape, and they were steady, not blinking.  No green or white lights were visible.  Even so, my next thought was that it was a flight of helo's going to nearby Los Alamitos Reserve Base.  Your mind just doesn't want to accept something that you've never seen before.  I pulled over, put the windows down, and there was absolutely NO sound!  Since the helo's also regularly operate in this area, even one of them can be heard for miles.  I'd say this was moving at less than 100 mph, and it slowly disappeared in a southwesterly direction.  My co-worker and I just looked at each other and asked "what the hell WAS that?"  We watched the evening news and checked the newspaper for several days, but never saw any mention of it.

Another time we were going to a Traffic Commission meeting and heard the Huntington Beach Police helo fast approaching.  We looked up as it passed over and it was chasing a GLOWING GREEN BALL of light!  No comment!

In the 70's, my brother had several sightings while living in the Bay Area.  This was part of a UFO "flap", as they're called, where there are multiple witnesses over several days or weeks of sightnings.  Some of these were at tree-top level, and people actually jumped out of their cars and went running up to nearby houses out of fear!

I don't believe that the military tests their latest, greatest flying machines over populated areas.  Anyone heard of Area 51, and the big land grab they did there to keep prying eyes away?

My wife and I were on a trip from the St. Louis area "FES"  to Jackson Michigan "JXN" June 19, 1998 in our then PA28R "Arrow" when we saw one.  This was over an MOA at  9500' VFR near the end of our trip about 6 PM.  This sighting was preceeded by a military jet most likely an F18 doing a loop in a nose over fashion just a mile or so ahead.  We were over a scattered  broken layer by at least 2000 ' and saw a black dot off to the right of our nose that was getting larger fast,  thinking it was another jet I immediatly deviated left hoping he would see our turn and avoid, but the dot just kept closing in with in a few seconds we could see this clearly was headed at us and again started a left bank turn prepairing to decend below the incoming if it didn't change course.  In a total time of about 45 sec. this round black sphere less than 5 feet in diameter came into sight and cleared our right wing as it passed us on a level flight path.  Less than a wing span of distance between sphere and our plane seperated us.  I would have discounted this as a balloon teathered in place  if it hadn't been for the visible vapor trail that went on for some distance after its passing.  Both I and my wife Jan couldn't believe we had actually got in enough turn while keeping it in sight to have missed it.  Checking my heading I had deviated about 45 deg. off course to the west and it  was off our right wing by 10 to 15 deg. when we first saw it.  I could swear I saw a single antenna off the top center and did not notice any rotation.  The next day my wife looked at me and out of nowhere ask if I had noticed the curtains in the windows,  I replied where,  she said in the flying saucer that damn near killed us.  I hope she was and is joking.  This is still a vivid memory and wish I had been on with ATC to have inquired about this target.  Flight Service didn't show any notams over the MOA that was supposed to have been cold.

Saw a flight of 2 UFO's from my police helicopter years ago, middle of the night, no traffic, on an Air Force tower freq.  Asked them about the traffic, they said I was the only one up.  Finally got them to look out their window and they saw what I saw.  The lights vanished at a speed that my brain almost could not compute.  Still have the exact date/time/location noted in my log book.....

I thought i did once.

I was driving down a two lane road in S/E Arizona. I gradually became aware of something up in the sky, being familiar with most flying things, I had an unconsciously  uneasy feeling about it. I then began to focus on it to determine what it was. I suppose I was uneasy because it didn't seem to conform to the laws of physics of flying. Roughly oval in shape, I could not identify it.

So I pulled the truck over and got my high power binoculars  out of the back and took a look.....................................And what did I see..................................

It was a "Tumble weed" the size of a Volkswagen floating along at about a 1,000 ft...............it must have gotten sucked up in a "Dust Devil" and then remained aloft in the thermal that resulted. Had me thinking for a while though.

There is an element reality in all this. I have been interested in UFO's for a long time, but not as a nut case, moreso from a scientific perspective. People ARE seeing things. I have seen some objects I could not explain. See my review at http://mufoncms.com/cgi-bin/manage_sighting_reports.pl?mode=view_long_desc&id=21763&rnd=499101268990902

My sighting was certainly not as dramatic as say Richard Willer and his wife's (see above), but as a pilot, and a person with alot of scientific background, how can you explain and incident like that, or thousands of others that people relate. These people are not making stuff up; you just cannot make up something with that much detail. So then you must ask, what did they see? And what about a mass sighting, like in Phoenix where hundreds of people saw something triangular with lights nearly a mile wide over the course of 1/2 an hour? Another thing that amazes me, is with EVERYONE having a camera in their phone now, that there is not more photographic evidence.

I am hesitant to speculate what people are seeing, but with so many reports and some with multiple witnesses, there is definitely something going on. If they are vehicles, this being an unperfect world, there will be a failure and there will be a crash from some reason, whether it is a midair, a shootdown, or just a mechanical. And with the information flow being so efficient and reports having a central reporting zone (see http://www.mufon.com ), there will be no hiding it, if it is terrestrially based (gov't, etc). But read through the reports at mufon, from common citizens who saw 'something'. You will find honest people who want answers. There are a few that are questionable, but mostly actual unexplainable  phenomenon of some type(s) are being observed. And alot of it cannot be explained by current technology. A five foot black sphere with a vapor trail at altitude with a near midair? They did not make that up, so what the hell was that??? or all the others?.. I, and I am sure many others, would really like to know. And as pilots, we who have opportunities to observe UFO's, have an advantage in being able to describe and identify what we see, compared to the general public who don't know a jet from a recip.

Members. Yes I did have an experience. But mine is rather unusual in that it was in broad daylight, about 5:30 PM on a clear summer evening. I also saw this object with another member of our group. I had just finished helping my friend and well known EAA

member move into a new house. Anyway in his back yard I spot an object at about 2800feet agl. it looked a a distance to be blimp ike but more streamlined. It was flying toward my location. I am watching it closely. We were close to YNG. on approach I noticed a Cessna 172 on approach, at analtitued of 1200 agl. The object was about  twice this distance above the ground. It was  roughly 50 ft in length. abut 20 feet wide and about 10 in depth. In other words a wing span of 20 ft witha 25 percent chord. Very rounded leading and trailing edges. actually the same. the "wingtips" looked very rounded. It was a dull aluminium in color.I will say the sun would not refelct off of it, seemed to be oxidised alum in color.  I could not see any type of propusion such as prop or jet. It seemed silent. Any way I also notice flying about 1200 feet above it is a Citation jet. And flying several thousand feet above the Citation is a mililtary fighter jet all travelling the same course and same speed witch I am guessing at 300 mph or so. Anyway as it get directly overhead I calmly ask my friend what type of aircraft is this and point to it.Now my friend is a well known EAA member and OscKkosh champion builder and designer. He can spot an aircraft at Oshkosh that looks like a dot to me and tell me not only  what it is but also the specific model. He looks and says "well what ever it  it, it does not have wings or tail. I think we just saw a UFO." The aircraft was silent as best as I could tell . The only sound could hear was from the Citation jet. Certainly Stealth. My best guess is it is some sort of experimental military stealth, but surprising that is was flying in broad daylight such that it could be seen. Too bad I did not have a camera as I could have had some very good daylight unobstructed pictures for sure. Well thats it. I am sure if the military is flying such a craft that others must be reporting the same thing. But it seems most of the reports are night reports that can easily be explained . But this it harder to explain away.  I remember my thought at the time was it was possible some sort of higth speed derigable airfoil, but have no idea what would control it's direction or provide power. But maybe it had very small directional fins that we could not see. Well that is my story. May not be from aother world but surely an Unidentified Flying Object..

Interesting thread.

I saw something in the dark, dead of night back in the late seventies. I was fishing on a beach in North Florida about 3am. It was a clear night with no moon and no ground lights in the area I was in. It was a dark night.

I noticed this "Thing"...a giant wing like shape no more than ohhh...300' altitude sail over me and just slightly off shore but I was looking up at a 60 degree angle easily...it was close but made no sound. It was not moving that fast but it was moving. This "Wing" was black. No Fuselage...no tail...just a long wing. I had the breeze in my ears and could not hear any kind of sound or noise this thing was making...if any.

It was on a course from N/E to South in a shallow left turn. I could see the entire profile of the bottom of this thing as it turned South. I do remember 6 very faint lights kind of round in shape along the "leading edge" of this object. Three on each side.

As it continue silently on it's southern course and disappeared into the night, never changing altitude or attitude, I was sure I had just seen my first UFO. It didnt Alarm me...or frighten me but I was intrigued...kinda mesmerized. After it was out out view, I kinda "snapped back" to my senses and thought..."What the #^*()(&%# was THAT"!!! ???? I didnt know...but it was COOL!!!

A few years later...I believe I Identified mt first "UFO". I believe it was the B-2 Stealth Bomber. I believe this aircraft was flying 10 years before anybody else saw it and at least 5 years before Washington D.C. knew of it. (I like to think so anyway).

Maybe it was...maybe it wasnt...but flight tests OPS out over the Atlantic launched from Patrick Air Force Base near the Cape makes sense to me...and who knows. Maybe they just drifted a little closer to the beach than they meant to.

I'am still looking for my first "Flying Saucer"...but I'm not expecting to see it anytime soon.

Dave

For about 20 minutes, I thought I saw a vivid orange rectangle in a dark and very windy night.  It was about 40 years ago and I was a young teenager home alone at the time.  After 20 minutes the clouds shifted enough for me to realize that it was a very orange moon showing through a slit in the clouds!  It took me another 10 minutes to slow my heart down!  Still chuckle about my overactive imagination!  (Any one recall Frank Edwards?)

#17 Posted: 3/23/2010 19:02:04

I saw something once, a long time ago as an adolescent in the Colorado mountains. I wasn't the only one to see it, so I know we didn't imagine it. But we were staring up into a typically crystal clear mountain sky at night, just looking at the stars and the Milky Way.  One of my friends said "hey, there's a satellite!" and we all started watching this light moving across the sky in a regular motion, just like something in orbit.

Then, all of a sudden it just stopped. Then it backed up. Then it sort of moved in a square pattern. And finally it just zipped away into the sky like it was going into Warp Drive.

We were sort of freaked out by that but never bothered to follow up to learn what it might have been.

Great thread idea!  My UFO interest has been going on almost as long as my interest in airplanes!

I've been looking up for a LOT of years now.  Still haven't seen one (UFO that is, that I don't believe to be an aircraft), but I keep looking.

Love the personal stories.  I know it's unlikely because of obvious reasons, but it would be great to hear from some airline pilots.  Maybe some former airline pilots?

This is where I used to Bowhunt...right up untill a UFO ring appeared about 350 yards from the stand ...I decided if I was going to get picked up ...I'd rather be flying than hunting little furry animals with hard antena's on their head...
