Wow ... this contest is for the July issue ...?!?! Even given the usual lead time for print publications, I can't believe we've gotten here so quickly ...

As before, here's how it all works:

  1. First, you’ll take a great photo, one that evokes the spirit of aviation. Feel free to include a caption or any other notes about the setting, subject matter, etc. The "spirit of aviation" is a broad definition - show us pictures OF aircraft, pictures taken FROM aircraft, people thinking ABOUT aircraft ... well, as long as it's obvious ... anyway, you get the idea.

  2. Then, you’ll reply to this thread and embed the picture in your post. (We prefer it if you include just one picture per post.) Note: to embed a picture, click the camera button on the toolbar to find and upload the file ....

  3. As our deadline approaches, the photo submissions will be reviewed by the editorial team (and me!), and we will choose a winner to be published in the magazine (with full and appropriate credit, naturally.)

  4. We’ll contact the photographer directly to arrange for their submission of a print-quality version of the winning photo (see below.) We’ll also provide the basic legalese at that point to ensure that we have the rights to publish the photo.

There are a few things to point out:

  • Note that, above, we said you’ll take the photo – submissions must be made by the original photographer.

  • While we will be choosing the winners ourselves, we are, in fact, human beings, and certainly wouldn’t ignore a picture if it had an unusually high “thumbs-up” count or a lot of positive comments here in the forum.

  • Photos must be posted here to be considered – email submissions will not be accepted.

  • In addition, the pictures you post here will be automatically resized for web viewing, which means they won’t be of a high-enough resolution for print. So, in order for your picture to be considered for publication, you must be able to provide a high resolution print-ready version on request.

  • This means that the original should ideally be 8 Megapixels (~3264 x 2448) or higher.

Enter as many pictures as you like – the more the merrier! (Though, again, we prefer you post each picture separately.)

NOTE:
The deadline for submissions to the July, 2010 issue is
May 15, 2010.

Hi, Hal:

I took this photograph shortly after I arrived at EAA AirVenture 2009 in Nathan Davis' immaculate P-51D Mustang, "Checkertail Clan." I was the first to arrive and park at the EAA Warbirds of America "Fightertown" and, as such, had no other airplanes around me to distract the scene. I was loading my rental car when an incredible photographic opportunity began to develop...a clear sky, a beautiful setting sun, the polished Mustang... I quickly grabbed my Canon Elan camera and began to take a series of photographs, this one being the first. I am "old school" and still use film, Fujucolor Pro160C. The result is what you see.

I like to call this photograph, "Liquid Metal."

Enjoy!

Happy flying, safey,

Jim Zazas

I took this photograph very shortly after the first one. The sun was setting, and I had only a very few minutes to compose the scene and get the photo. This photograph, like all the others in the series, was an incredible combination of being-there-at-the-right-time and luck!

I like to call this photograph, "Mustang Reflections."

Enjoy!

Happy flying, safely,

Jim Zazas

One more image from this incredible series of photographs I took that evening at EAA AirVenture...

The sun was setting, and I had only a minute or more of useful light.

Happy flying, safely,

Jim Zazas

Hi, Hal:

I better stop, or I'll overwhelm your reply box... This photograph is one of the last in the series of eight images I shot that evening. With a little cropping, I am sure this image will frame very well into a great photograph. Enjoy!

Happy flying, safely,

Jim Zazas

Two Harvards from the South African Harvard club doing a late afternoon flight from Cape Town. The customary afternoon haze in autumn gives the photo a romantic feel of flying days gone by.

Can one of the moderators please embed my picture from my previous post please? I tried to embed it, but it just went back to the empty post and did nothing. Thanks!

I don't know who this little guy was, but he sure was enjoying himself. It was taken at AirVenture 2009.
