I assume you're talking about mandatory VFR flight plans on page 10 of the Jan issue of Sport Aviation. "Issues on our Radar", Security Concerns.
You can put 8 foot fences and gates around the airport. You can legislate avgas out of existence. You can keep us flying below 10,000 msl. But restricting our EARNED privelege to come and go as we please smacks of house arrest.
To quote my flying buddy, "I ain't filin' no frickin' flight plan to get my $100 hamburger or to watch a sunset!" I agree.

I think you view of European aviation is a little skewed - I have never had to file a VFR flight plan except when crossing an international boarder. Operational aviation freedoms are similar to, or greater than, the US. Can't see any justification for mandatory VFR flight plans - who is going to do what with the plan?
