What is going on with EAA Chapter Insurance?  The EAA web site lists what I thought were activities that are and are not allowed.  http://www.eaa.org/apps/insurance/

What is it with an EAA Chapter wanting to be named as additionally insured at least 10-days in advance of their event if you want to do a "Fly-By" or "Formation flight" while the event is taking place at a public airport that does not have waivered airspace?

See this link:  http://www.eaa105.org/Activities/NW_RV/Documents/Insurance_Article.pdf

Do we have one Chapter that is out of control or one individual in the chapter that is trying to make his own empire?

In My Humble Opinion, operations at a public airport that received FAA funds must be in accordance with CFR Title 14 Part 91 are authorized at any time without having someone else named as an additional insured on my insurance polity.

If this is a new requirement that EAA is placing on its Chapters, I will be boycotting all chapter events and will never be a Chapter member again if this is what is happening.

Respectfully,

It would be nice to get a reading on this. From the app/insurance site referenced, fly-bys and and formation passes are not prohibited and don't need waivered airspace.

When I read the LATEST copy of the Chapter Handbook , it stated that IF the Chapter was planning to ARRANGE and SPONSOR formation then the pilots need to have named the EAA Chapter as additionally insured.

EAA Chapter 105 thinks that anyone flying formation at their fly-in is required to name the chapter as an additionally insured .

I agree with your take on the subject.  I have emailed the Chapter Office and Liesl Wrolstad (EAA Risk Management) for clarification but so far no clarification.

Note:   If the above links do not work, I will post the entire URL for them in another message.

Hi Gary,

Your read is correct, if a Chapter is organizing and arranging formation flights, then the additionally insured status is needed.  If a chapter is holding an event and several pilots show up in formation, then it is not necessary to obtain additional insured status.

The key is if the Chapter is arranging the formation flights, then the additional insured clause would be in force.

I will need to check in more detail about the Chapter 105 event you have referenced.

Hi Steve,

Thanks for clarifying this.  That is what my interpretation of the policy was.  Chapter 105 Board members still insist that anyone flying in formation needs to have the coverage even though Chapter 105 is not organizing or arranging any flights.
