I know of at least four other Chipmunk pilots, besides myself, who are planning on flying their beauties in to Oshkosh 2010.  This made me think that it would be delightful to have a 'de Havilland Extravaganza' as one of the AirVenture themes.

Does anyone know who we have to lobby to register a theme/feature for the event?

Is there anyone out there who also has Chipmunk, other de Havilland aircraft or derivative from Sir Geoffrey's great company who is considering bringing it next year?

The Comet Racer would fit in beautifully with the ensemble.  Perhaps the RAF would donate a Nimrod too.

Great idea Carol!

Vintage Wings of Canada has a Tiger Moth, Fox Moth and Chipmunk. There was a beautifully maintained Carribou as well as our Vintage Wings Beaver on Aeroshell Square this year.

The Canadian Forces are still flying Buffalos which they take to air show and do great STOL demos with.

Viking Air now has the Twin Otter back in production.

Dear Don & Don

Thanks for the feedback.  I shall use it, if I may, as fodder for forwarding my suggestion to the powers that be.  What is the issue with the dH-4?  Is the problem physical, finacial or something else?

I am involved in maintaining Two Chipmunks.  One stock ex-RAF and one modified.  I get to fly the stock one (lucky me!).  I would love to get my friends who own these to get them both to fly to Oshkosh next year.

How about we bug Kermit Weeks enough to get him to get the Mosquito going again. I would give bother my arms to see the "Wooden Wonder".

Hi Charles

May I ask which two Chipmunks you look after?  When we start arranging the Gathering of Chipmunks and Legends at Oshkosh, if there is a reasonable chance you will be able to join us, do you want to be included in our loop?

I fly WD286 in England, WK559 in Virginia (which I displayed at Oshkosh in 2005), but the one I will be bringing next year is WK588.  All three are in RAF silver with yellow stripes.

William

I don't know for certain, but I would expect that Kermit gets bugged quite a bit about his Mosquito.  I'm not privvy to the reasons why the poor girl is stagnating.  I suspect the best we might get, if this Extravaganza gets off the ground is for it to be wheeled out to Aeroshell Square.

Are you aware that there is another Mosquito being restored to fly right now?  The progress is very excellent, but it may have another couple of years before she flies ... and you won't have to lose your arms!

Go to the top contact Paul P. himself...

I'm sure I could get 4 or 5 Canadian Chipmunks and I'm sure there would be more if the word got out.

How about  a mass arrival?

Think big!

Hello James

Thank you for your response.  A mass arrival is an obvious thing to contemplate.  There are many hurdles to cross, on that front, it won't be right for everyone, but I do like a good challenge.  See how much enthusiasm you can stir  up in your neck of the woods, we'll start building an email list and get the ball rolling.

I can hear them Gipsys stormin' in now!

I wonder if Sir Torquil Norman could be persuaded to bring his DH-90 Dragonfly across "The Pond" again?

Hi Ray

I just so happened to be talking ot Henry Labouchere a few days ago.  I think the chances are slim to zero or even less.

Pity.

Did you Chipmunk folk know there is a new book just out on Sunday.  It's got 440 pages with absolutely loads of colour photos.  Here's the link to it.

See you in July

That is a beautiful book - I find it very strange that I haven't bought myself one yet! Maybe for Christmas ...

Great video, as well - I have a real fondness for ex-RCAF trainers and the skies of Ontario!

Hi, Carol,

The stock Chipmunk is WK643 (N643WK).  Here is a link to a picture.

The other is N12158.

I sure would like to get both of them to go to Oshkosh.  I would not mind being asked to fly WK643 there.  I would have to get my wife to go along with it.  Please keep me informed!

Has anyone started to put a list together to see how many people would take there Chipmunks to Oshkosh 2010?

A friend of mine (Hugh Shields) who is one of the authers of "DHC-1 Chipmunk the poor mans spitfire" was asking me how my chipmunks would be willing to go to Oshkosh, because he would like to go back there with his Chipmunk 18011, and I know our 2 chipmunks would go 18017 ans 18054.

I think if there is enough interest Hugh Shields
happy would work on it ???.

Jim

If something Chipmunk does come together for Oshkosh, please keep me in the loop. Although as yet I am only a wannabe Chipmunk owner, I'd enjoy being involved.

(And if anyone hears of a Chipmunk available in the SF Bay area, please let me know. There was one sold in Novato last month; I missed it by hours. :-(

Thanks,

Dan

Hi Carol,

as 2010 is a (or 'the') centenary year for de Havilland (the 100th anniversary of the first successful flight of a de Havilland aeroplane will be celebrated in September), this year is at least as good as any other to have a 'de Havilland Extravaganza' at Airventure!

Perhaps you should get in touch with Stuart McKay of the de Havilland Moth Club (www.dhmothclub.co.uk) to help spread the word - at least two more issues of the Club's magazine will be published before July, and they also have an 'Electric Moth' newsletter e-mailed to Club members monthly or so. Strictly speaking the Chipmunk isn't one of their 'representative aircraft types', but they have plenty of members in North America who might bring in 'proper' (:-)) de Havilland types (I'm thinking of the Dragon Rapide that was promised for last year's Airventure, for instance). Then there is also the (European) 'Chipmeet' in May (www.chipmeet.com) through which you might drum up some interest - in fact I'd be happy to do so myself, but then I'd like to have a better idea of who else is coming to Airventure, so could we please have a show of hands? (incl. type and perhaps reg/tailnumber)

Of course the Comet Racer would fit in beautifully with the ensemble, but then it would probably do so anywhere, wouldn't it? :-) The RAF will be withdrawing the Nimrod from service in March, however (pending delivery of the MRA4's in 2012), so there will definitely be no Comet airliner at Airventure this year...

Hello Roger

I have been a member of the Moth Club for many years.  Stuart McKay writes the most wonderful emails and I am very aware that he sees the Chipmunk as some new-fangled, barely-tolerable (with tongue firmly in cheek) flying machine!!  Yes, he is in the loop for my Chipmunks to Oshkosh.

I cannot make it to the Chipmeet, but I was fortunate enough to be part of the 15-Chipmunk swarm last September over Cambridge.  Any email addresses you can pass on to me to organise the gathering would be most appreciated.

I believe there may will be a Dragon Rapide at Oshkosh.
