We're starting to develop the schedule for the Fly-In Movie Theater at AirVenture 2010 and I'm looking for your creative suggestions.

Some guidance notes:

*     Priority will be given to movies we haven't shown before (list of prior years is below).

*    Our goal is to pair a good aviation film with an interesting person that can introduce it.  So in addition to movie ideas, please feel free to suggest people too.

*     We're trying to avoid long films so the program doesn't go too late into the night... longer than 2hrs 30mins starts to become a problem.

*    Generally we try to avoid "R" rated movies.

(As a related side note I should acknowledge that we received a fair amount of negative feedback about the length and content of the pre-show in 2009, and plan on making appropriate adjustments for 2010).

Thanks in anticipation of your suggestions!

Here are some ideas that I came up with:

#1 Amelia (2009).  Maybe Hillary Swank or the pilots in the movie could intro.

#2 Always (1989).  Appropriate movie considering how much the fire has devastated California.

#3 Iron Eagle (1986).  Not the greatest movie but I love the scenes with the Cessna 150 Aerobat.

#4 Flight of the Phoenix (1965) or (2004)

#5 Pancho Barnes (1988) (TV Movie with Valerie Bertinelli)

#6 Firebirds (1990). Good one for the helicopter buffs.

#7  The Tuskegee Airman (1995)

#8 Flight of the Intruder (1991)

#9 The Winds of Kitty Hawk (1978) (TV)

I can't wait to fly into Airventure 2010!!  See you there!!

A couple of recommendations:

Island in the Sky - John Wayne heads up a great cast in William Wellman's adaptation of the Ernest Gann classic.  Great story and some of the best aerial cinematography ever.

Only Angels Have Wings - Cary Grant and Jean Arthur star in a story about roughneck pilots flying the mail in 1930's South America.  Directed by Howard Hawks

Flight of the Phoenix - I know Scott suggested it above, but I will add it here with the caveat that ONLY the 1965 version be considered.  The 2004 version was a waste of film.

Airport - Dean Martin stars in the Arthur Hailey story.  This is one of the few worthy successors to The High and The Mighty.  I'm kind of diffident about suggesting it - it's a good story, both in the novel and the film, but it does focus on a bombing in an airliner, so I'm not sure if it fits here.

Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo - Van Johnson in the true story of the Doolittle Raid.  Directed by Mervyn LeRoy, with Spencer Tracy supporting (!) as General Doolittle.  Fascinating as it was filmed during the war very shortly after the raid was declassified, so it captures the feeling of the time.

More later...

It does look like it's getting tough to find top quality films that are aviation or space related. If Ice Pilots isn't run in the US by next summer, perhaps getting the rights to show a couple episodes of the show would be possible

I don't see any animated films on that list. How about...

Kurenai no buta  IMDB link

In Early 1930's era Italy, air pirates, bounty hunters and high flyers of all sorts rule the skies. The most cunning and skilled of these pilots is Porco Rosso, a man cursed with the head of a pig after watching the spirits of the pilots killed in the last air battle he fought in rise to the heavens. He now makes a living taking jobs, such as rescuing those kidnapped by air pirates. Donald Curtis, Porco's rival in the air and in catching the affections of women, provides a constant challenge to the hero, culminating in a hilarious, action packed finale.

Back to real life...

The Reluctant Astronaut IMDB link

Don Knotts is Roy Fleming, a small town kiddie-ride operator who is deathly afraid of heights. After learning that his father has signed him up for the space program, Roy reluctantly heads for Houston, only to find out upon arriving that his job is a janitor, not an astronaut. Anxious to live up to the expectations of his domineering father, Roy manages to keep up a facade of being an astronaut to his family and friends. When NASA decides to launch a lay person into space to prove the worthiness of a new automated spacecraft, Roy gets the chance to confront his fears.

Piece of Cake – Cliff Robertson

Firefox – Clint Eastwood

The Aviator – Matt Damon

May I recommend Public Enemies? Not a aviation-themed film of course, but much of the movie was filmed in WI, especially Oshkosh. EAA's Ford Tri-Motor has a cameo as well! A great movie w/ local ties to the community.

Fighter Squadron - story about a P-47 squadron during WWII.  I think we could find a P-47 pilot to introduce the film.

One more vote for Porco Rosso!  Disney released this in the US with English dubs - Michael Keaton voices the main character Porco Rosso.  It's an alternate reality based in the 1920s with sky pirates.  Great flick.  As a related speaker I would suggest Jason Petroelje, who's Macchi M.5 flying boat was on display during AirVenture 2009.

Dark Blue World - story about Czech pilots flying for the RAF during WWII.  Excellent movie.

An often forgotten favorite of mine was "No Highway In The Sky" starring James Stewart. A movie starring a pilot about a commercial airplane that has serious metal fatigue issues. Stewart is terrific!

Good one, Larry - a real forgotten classic!

And here's another vote for "Dark Blue World" (or "Tmavomodrý svet" as I call it to irritate my wife) as Zack suggested - a wonderful film, making brilliant use of a couple of Spitfires and some cleverly redone footage from "Battle of Britain."

"Test Pilot", 1938. Clark Gable and Myrna Loy.

Typical Hollywood romance, but with airplanes, pilots, test flights, and air races.

"Chain Lightning", 1950, Humphrey Bogart, Eleanor Parker.

You know how some films are so poorly done they're hilarious? Well, this one has enough technical anachronisms (mechanical "groundspeed" gauge, flying through meteor showers at 70,000 feet, etc.) to enjoy on a mocking level. Bogie picked up on these production values (and his overblown character) and delivered a great performance doing a send-up of the tough-guy/false-hero type. With a proper set-up by the presenter, this film could be a real howler! Oh, Bogie gets the gal too!

Given the apparent shortage of quality but not-too-long aviation films suitable for the whole family, how about "Homebuilder Night at the movies"? Not the widest audience but what are doing at OSH anyway?

Possible titles or excerpts:

From the Ground Up (RV8 building)

Dave(?) Evans, the animal vet from England building a Europa or the RotorWay helicopter

EAA Hints for Homebuilders

WWII vintage maintenance and training films

After a whole day/week of all that stuff!?  I gotta tell you, I want entertainment by that time of day, not education!!goggles

But, if we do want to add some of the World War II training material, how about some of the animated stuff from the Disney archives as pre-feature shorts?  Some of that stuff was hilarious and is rarely seen.

I agree with you, Bob. A whole week?!?! That's why I wrote "Homebuilder Night", as in singular, one, uno.
loopy

Another thought. I wonder if any of the outtakes were saved during taping the Hints for Homebuilders. Any funny ones that could be compiled into a "Football Follies" type of package?

For that matter, given our "just the facts, ma'am" nature, make a 1 hour compilation movie of just the best flying scenes from the movies. Now there's a task, sorting out that one.

Since I hven't seen all the movies that others have listed so far, I would not mind seeing any one of them! I actually would like to find a way to purchase the movies listed, anyone got any suggestions on where to get them? It seems everyone enjoys outtakes and funny stuff that happens to be caught on tape that is not used in the regular movies, so, how about a couple of hours worth of out takes from popular aviation flicks! I am sure Mr. Harrison Ford could round up some memorable ones, and he may have some other connections to othe aviation movie outtakes. Thanks, see you in Oshkosh 2010, Dennis Kir

Thanks for all the great suggestions so far, keep them coming.

"Dark Blue World" has been suggested. In my opinion this is one of the greatest flying films ever.  The only reason we haven't shown it yet is because it's got quite a lot of subtitles.   How does everyone feel about that?

How about "Skyward" with Bette Davis and Suzie Gilstrap?  It was a GE Theaters' made-for-TV production and one of Ron Howard's first movies as a director.  The story is about a young paraplegic girl that learns to fly in a Stearman and a Christen "Eagle".  Caught my fancy in high school.
