Noob question, Leaving Sunday Afternoon?

Hello, first time to Airventure and I have some questions about the Sunday afternoon air show and heading out for home.

I'll be using a ferry to get from Muskegon Michigan to Milwaukee and then back again.  The drive between Osh Kosh and Milwaukee looks to be about 90 minutes.  There is a Sunday evening ferry at 7:00pm.

The final airshow appears to be from 2:00pm to 5:00pm.  That gives me 2 hours to get to the ferry in Milwaukee.

*  Is there any chance that I can get out of Osh Kosh if I stay until the air show ends, or is it a zoo on the roads?

* Is the Sunday afternoon air show "the big one" or is Saturday just as good or better?

I don't mind staying Sunday night if that air show is the one that should not be missed.  I'll have seen several air shows by Sunday already so if Sunday is similar to the others I would consider leaving half way through.

Appreciate comments and opinions.

Thanks,

Rick

Hi Rick

You're going to LOVE Airventure!

The short answer to your question is, I bet you won't have any trouble getting out of OSH after the airshow on Sunday.  I suspect that those that haven't already left to travel long distances, will be leaving all during the day Sunday to get home to work Monday or Tuesday.

Saturday is "The Big One", and don't forget to stay for the Saturday night airshow.

Happy Landings

Rick

If you leave Oshkosh at 5:00 there is no chance you will make the ferry. First of all depending on where you are parked you will have a 10 or 15 minute walk to the car maybe longer. I don't know exactly where the ferry terminal is but  you will have to deal with some traffic in Milwaukee even on a Sunday. Also last year there was a lot of construction on some areas of the freeway in Milwaukee and a lot of backups. I don't know if is is still going on or not.Lastly you have to arrive at the ferry dock 30 minutes prior to sailing,45 minutes if you are taking your car.If you want to see the Sunday show I would relax and stay over on Sunday night and take the Monday morning ferry.

I was not aware there was a ferry from Muskegon to Milwaukee. After seeing your post I checked into it. Looks like it would cost about $200 one way for driver and car so I will just be driving from Detroit.

Hope this helps. Karl

There is also a car ferry from Ludington, MI to Manitiwoc, WI.  The website is www.ssbadger.com.  I think it is less expensive, but it takes 4 hours for the crossing.  Manitowoc is about 90 minutes from Oshkosh also.

Check it out,

Jim

Rick-

Welcome to your first oshkosh visit....after one trip you will be hooked and will want to come back year after year.  We stayed over for a Sunday in 2009 and many exhibitors/displays start leaving around noon on Sunday.  My suggestion would be that if you have only 1 day try to come on Saturday.  That way you'll have a full day to see the show and the displays.

Hi Rick,

I see you will already have seen several airshows by the Sunday - in that case there won't be any reason why you should stay until the end of the Sunday airshow (unless you can't get enough of sports aerobatics reruns). Any of the airshows earlier in the week will be more interesting, and the (new) mass warbird fly-out before the start of the Sunday airshow is to me the official acknowledgement that the Convention is to all intents and purposes over.

Trying to do Oshkosh - Milwaukee in 90 minutes is pushing it anyway. Apart from all the reasons mentioned above the friendly local LEA along the road may always be watching out for your security from behind every bush or telephone pole!

Enjoy your first Oshkosh!
