Hi everybody!!

I'm writing from Costa Rica, so here there is no much ultralights, and of course no ultralights factories...

So, I ask myself, what is required to start building and selling ultralights?? I'm mechanical engineer, so I think that with effort I can design a side by side ultralight, with STOL capabilities. Where I can find the regulations regarding this topic? How I can say: This plane meets LSA regulations, and I can sell it to you!  Which could be the easiest way to start without fail in the road??

I know that this sound crazy, but well, I have a life to enjoy, ja ja!! Any help to fulfill this dream will be highly appreciated, any comment is valid!!!

Pura Vida!!

Esteve.

Esteve,

Consider reselling Quicksilver Aircraft.  These are very good aircraft and could be shipped unassembled to Costa Rica.

Good advice Dana, I going to contact Quicksilver to see what can we do.

Elton, we are located in the North part of Costa Rica, in Florencia, San Carlos. Next to la Fortuna and Arenal Volcano. We have some experience repairing ultralights, recently we repaired a Challenger II,  we are flying this now, and we had rebuild and set up for fly a Quicksilver MX. Have you been here in Costa Rica??

regards!

Hello Esteve,

When you have a chance, you might want to take a look at the Hiperlight.  It comes in 2 models, a single place legal ultralight, and a 2 place side by side version that can be used for training.  You can check them out at www.hiperlightaircraft.com

Look forward to speaking with you.

Hello Esteve,

You may want to look at the Preceptor N3 Pup Ultralight as well. www.preceptoraircraft.com

It is available as plans built or they offer sub kits with prewelded Fulelage. It can be powered by the readily available 1/2-VW engine.

I have one, and it is one sweet plane. If you want the looks of the classic "Piper Cub", this is one to look at.

Good luck with your venture.

Regards,

Ross Schmitt

First, you must be more specific. Aircraft meeting Ultralight Part 103 is not the same as LSA. Your intent seems to want to make aircraft for sale? I suggest you contact  your country's government  website at: www.dgac.go.cr/   Costa Rica has its matching requirements for Part 103 and you should follow those regs.(RAC-103).

LSA, thats another story, well....

You are right Dolpho, but here regulations are still at begining, because there is not too much ultralight movement. I know that most airplanes are under part 103, for example the unique CT2K here... and a couple of experimentals.. regulations here are still quite open, so I think that I have to fight with the system to start doing something like this. I think that a good point to start is open an EAA chapter and a flight school of ultralights, with this probably we can start to close some gaps in regulations... In fact, I would like to design a LSA, build it and and see what happen....

Thanks a lot for your help!!

Thanks a lot Ross!!

Very nice airplanes, specially because they are VW powered. Recently I bought a VW 1600 aiming to rebuild it for a side by side ultralight. But the ultrapup is awesome!!
