Hey it's John, Steve Ackerman's son.

Me and my dad have finally decided (more so I've finally convinced him) to build an airplane together. We've decided on the Pietenpol Air-Camper, partially because we both love the design, and open-cockpit etc. but also because it's one of the cheapest airplanes to build. We are currently living in Olive Branch, MS but we'll probably moving back to SC in the next few months. I was wondering if there was anyone near here (Olive Branch, for right now) that owns a Pietenpol that might let us come look at it, and/or take us for a flight in it. We're both long-time aviation enthusiasts, but neither of us have gotten our pilot's licenses yet. I'm going to college in the fall to become a missionary pilot, and I'll get all my licenses and ratings (including A&P license) there. Anyway, just wondering if anyone near here owned a Pietenpol. :)

John, I wish you and your dad the best of luck on your project and I think the Father/Son aspect is awesome. My son Chris and I are starting a Father/Son Cub at this time also. Your father is a wise man to invest himself in you in the form of building this Piet with you. But then again, I can tell he already has invested himself in you throughout your life by virtue of the fact that you're going to school to become a missionary pilot. Well done - both of you.

Pietenpols are awesome and they seem to catch Father/Son builders. You probably already have it, but if you watch the "Barstorming" video, Frank Pavliga's Piet was a partnership with his dad. Great story.

Good job you guys!

Great idea!  Might try asking around - I'd ask at the Pietpenol facebook page for a starter

Sign on to Facebook and search "Pietenpol Aircamper"

Another good resource is the Pietenpol discussion group on the www.matronics.com site. Scroll down to find the link to the discussion groups.

And one more excellent site is www.westcoastpiet.com LOTS of pictures and more info.

Enjoy!

I don't know about MS- even though I used to live in Tupelo. If you don't mind a trip- or if you're visiting SC anytime soon- there are several in the Atlanta area. The Big Piet guys out west of ATL, in Villa Rica (I think) and one at Lenora- a private strip in Gwinnett county. Sorry I don't any contact info. The Lenora Piet is featured on several YouTube videos, and Sport Aviation did an article on the Big Piet guys a while back.

biggrin

I'm still working on the first stage of that, convincing my dad...

Congrats!  Hope your build turns out well and you and your father get into the air!
