I am building a  full scale, all aluminum flyable replica of the Seversky/Republic P-35A. The replica is to be powered by a  R-1830-92 Pratt and Whitney power plant as fitted to the C-47/DC-3 & PBY. The aircraft was originally powered by (P-35) R-1830-9 and (P-35A) R-1830-45 that are nonexistent. For mock up and preliminary fitting FWF (firewall forward) as many  PBY parts will be used as possible (engine mount, accessory cowling). It  will have the Hamilton Standard 3E50 counterweight propeller replaced with the HS 23E50 hydromatic propeller. As (again) the counterweight propeller is nonexistent and the 23E50 is very available. A non feathering 23E50 hub similar to what is fitted to the new build Yak-3 was purchased.

I have chosen to honor the 5th Air Force, 24th Pursuit Group, 17th Squadron that "drew first blood" in December 1941. The first aircraft will be painted in representative colors of an aircraft from that group. Historical pictures have been consulted and a rendering commissioned based upon them.

Hi David!  Welcome to Oshkosh365!  I've been following your project for a while now through WIX.  It's really a fascinating project!  I'm thinking about building a 1/2 scale replica of the P-35's grandchild - a W.A.R. replica P-47.  I give you credit for having the patience to start a full-size project like this from scratch.  I hope you keep us informed of your progress, and with any luck, we'll see you here with it at AirVenture someday.

Nice choice of aircraft to replicate. You should join the Replica Fighters Association. Here is our website:

http://replicafighter.org. We are a group of people (all EAA members) building replica warbirds. We have a clubhouse at Oshkosh and we attend other events. Fell free to contact me if you want to know more.

I'm something of a radial engine fan myself.

Now are you guys going to get your own area near the 'real' war birds section? I just finished the Fake War Birds post. There is nothing like the sound of a radial. You can hear whats missing in the lope of a Harley.
