Does anyone out there have some good advise for painting on and around piano hinges?  Apart or together? How do you keep paint from cracking etc...

Thank You in advance for any thoughts...

Hey Mike, You can try sand blasting them first. You're gonna want to tape off any area that you don't want to remove paint from around them first. I use a siphon feed bucket blaster with a regulator and keep the pressure down to about 40 psi. It shoots a small area.  Use large grain sand so it won't get in between the hinge barrels. What this does is removes any existing paint, wax, oils and gives the surface "tooth'. Wipe it down with a fast evaporating solvent.Next thing your're gonna have to do is reapply any corrosion inhibitor it might have had on it.  Then repaint it with your color coat. Light sanding with 600 grit between coats helps maintain the tooth. This is one area that I wouldn't apply a clear coat, the thing to avoid is thick layers of paint. Chips between the hinge barrels are pretty much a given especially if their on the vertical.

Hope this helps,        J.
