Any other U/L or small LSA pilots interested in doing a flying caravan to OSH this year?

A friend and I did it last year and it was a TOTAL blast.

I flew a Minimax 1600R from Salt Lake City  (Rotax 503) and he flew his SkyRaider II (Rotax 503).

Any interested?

I cruise at ~70-75MPH TAS.   my route starts in Utah, and fly at altitudes up to 10,000 over Wyoming.  I'm willing to fly to meet up for the journey!   FUN!

Cory,

Great to hear you want to earn a back-to-back iron butt award!  Flying from Utah to Oshkosh in a miniMAX and a SkyRaider...my hat is off to you and Quinn for making that adventure happen!

Too bad Quinn can't make it this year.  I hope you find someone else looking for an overdose of fun and adventure.  If you want to fly to Omro, WI, I will meet up with you there and we can fly the last 15 miles together.

Timm

I maybe flying from Bend, OR to OSH this year.  Did it last year as a flight of 2 X-Airs and had a great time.  Our cruise is slightly faster, but I am sure we could work it out.  Unfortunately, I will not know until a few weeks before OSH.

I can push my cruise speed up to 70-75 if I had too.

Let me know!   I sure hope to put together a group to do this!     I absolutely LOVED doing it last year.

Anyone else?

It's going to be a BLAST!

Don't forget you can now camp in the Ultralight area.

You can also SHIP your gear right to AirVenture and pick it up when you arrive.  (this is what I do)

Come on!  We need a FULL ultralight area this year!

You have a couple months to get your bird setup for x-country!

Cory - you can ship gear and pick it up when you arrive? I'll be flying my ultralight out and tying down the with RFA guys, would be nice to bring something more than a single pair of underwear ;-)

yep!

Last year shipping address I used was:

YOUR NAME

c/o GES Exposition Services

Wittman Field

EAA Convention Site

1001 West Waukau Avenue, Oshkosh, WI 54902

Last year they didn't accept anything BEFORE July 23, so plan the arrival of your package accordingly.

With all the exhibition changes this year, they might change the shipping address.    I noticed that it has not yet been posted on the AirVenture site.   You should watch http://airventure.org/planning/services.html under the heading SHIPPING INFORMATION.

You pick up your package at the GES trailer in the middle of the convention.  Easy to find (last year it was between hangar B and D, but they've moved a couple times, and with the new grass going in, expect it to move again)

In any case, it's AWESOME for us pilots with U/L aircraft to be able to ship a couple boxes.

Last year it was VERY nice to only have to carry stuff on board my mini that I needed to accomplish the flight.

I always just ship absolute necessities, as Walmart during AirVenture always has rediculously low prices on chairs and camping stuff.   I picked up a nice folding chair for $5 (less than the cost to ship one) a little BBQ grill for $15 and some food...    Just use your judgement and realize Oshkosh has it down pat, if you forget someone, you're among friends.

To ship stuff back, the USPS sets up a neato little post office over just north of the convention hangars.  (not quite as far as the North 40 parking)

So saddle up your small planes and make no excuses!   Let's fly to AirVenture!

Cory.

You amy want to shoot an email to Mark Beierle of Earthstar Aircraft. He often flys one of his planes there. I dont know if he is flying this year or taking the electric ultralight. His email is mbeie438@aol.com

FYI,   EAA has updated the services page with this year's attendee shipping information!

http://airventure.org/planning/services.html

See you at Oshkosh!

Also, please let me know if you're interested in joining the flying caravan to AirVenture this year.   Looks like we have several people going that otherwise wouldn't make the journey and I'm happy to have more join in on the fun.

My journey starts in Salt Lake City, Utah and I'll be cruising at about 75MPH and 1,000 to 1,500' AGL the whole way to Oshkosh, but we have people flying as slow as 60mph and as fast as 100mph.    We're sharing hotels along the way and I've contacted and negotiated fuel rates for participants at many of our designated fuel stops.

We loosely are planning on departing July 22ish (no later than the 23rd) and taking 3 days.  Route takes the most scenic route to Oshkosh possible, with fuel stops every 100 miles or so if needed.

I can be reached either on this thread or via facebook  "Slow and Low Flying Club".

Share with your potentially interested friends!  It's going to be GOOD!

Cory,

What's your intended route?

I flew my Voisin to Osh in '08 along with a friend in a Preceptor N3 Pup. It WAS a blast.

Just wondering if you are coming thru Iowa.

Corey

Hi Cory,

This is Dennis Moss, the guy that sold you the Mini-Max.  Looks like you're having lots of fun with it!  Our flight school plans to have a fly-out to OSH this year in light sport aircraft, and I'll probably be flying there in a Remos G-3 with a student.  Hope to see you there, we're leaving on the Saturday before the show starts, but planning on only taking a day to get there.  Saw the video of you at OSH last year, looks like a blast!

Hi Corey,

Our route will take us along the northern border of Iowa.     We'd love to have you and your friend join us!     We're planning on stopping at 55Y (Rushford, MN) for some breakfast on Sunday morning before OSH.   We'll probable have at least a half dozen people by then.

Hello Dennis!

Good to hear from you.    Yep the Mini has been a ton of fun.   I've made several improvements (including new engine, EMS, and seating/comfort stuff, and streamlined struts) to make it a slightly better machine to travel with.

Let's find each other if for no other reason than to say hello at AirVenture!

UPDATE on 2010 Trip.

My long time flying buddy, Quinn Falk passed away on June 25.      I won't be making the trip to AirVenture this year in my Minimax.

Quinn was beloved in the Salt Lake City area as he was the pilot who flew a large banner for an aerial advertising company.     Most notably, he flew the Salt Lake Bees banner.

I will be flying to AirVenture, however, I'll be flying in my Mooney M20E.

This years trip to AirVenture will be an emotional one for me, I'll still be posting highlights of the journey on twitter.com/flyctrobin

Thanks for all the support, and I'll be sure to spend a bunch of time with my fellow LSA/Ultralight friends at AirVenture.

Fly safe!

Cory.

Cory -

Sorry to hear about your buddy.

For several years I've been wanting to fly to Oshkosh from OAK in my AirBorne trike, but haven't been able to make everything come together.  Lately I've added a Xenon gyroplane, so now have a couple of low & slow choices.

I knew that this year wasn't an option (I'll be getting there as an airline passenger), but your post gave me hope that by next year I can find a group interested in making the low & slow trek together!

Peter

Peter,

That's a deal.   Next year I hope to fly Low 'n Slow to AirVenture 2011.    I'm planning on a ground support RV coming along to eliminate the need for so many hotel stays, as well as make packing the aircraft non-existant.

If we plan it right, and spread the word, we could get quite a group together.

I'd love to have you next year!

For anyone who's interested.   I'd love to meet you during the Ultralight/Light Plane Pig Roast 7/31/2010 - 7:00 PM - 10:00 PM - at the Nature Center at AirVenture this year.

I'd love talk about organizing a Slow n' Low caravan for next year's AirVenture as well!
